When it comes to waxing, we know how hard it is to separate facts from fiction. It can be difficult to identify what is true, making waxing seem dangerous and scary which is why we created this series.

For this blog, we interviewed Jane Witmer, our Wax Queen. With over 25 years in the industry, Jane has honed her craft, prioritizing education, sanitation and personalized services. Come along as we debunk some common wax myths with her!

Waxing causes permanent skin damage.

Myth: "When done properly, it will not damage the skin. Irritation after waxing can be minimized with the right after-care at home and what I myself, the waxer, put on the skin afterward which is usually Witch Hazel and Fur Oil."

Waxing causes ingrown hairs.

Myth: "Waxing doesn't cause ingrown hairs. It's more incorrect exfoliation of the skin or, especially where I see it, is where clothing is tight on areas of the skin. To help alleviate that, is using proper exfoliation methods and using the right products at home. I usually recommend Fur Oil because when used regularly wherever you shave or wax, it is going to help soften the hair so you reduce future ingrown hairs."

You can't wax if you have sensitive skin.

Myth: "Yes, you can wax if you have sensitive skin! There are different waxes such as ones made just for sensitive skin that may have chamomile in them. Another option are hard waxes which are less invasive on the skin as opposed to strip waxes."

You can't wax if you're on your period.

Myth: "It is recommended a few days before or after not to wax because your skin may be a little bit more sensitive, but I leave it up to the client. If they are on their period at the time, I recommend wearing a tampon, but waxing is fine depending on what the client chooses."

Waxing makes hair grow back thicker and darker.

Myth: "No it doesn't! With consistent waxing, hair can become finer and sparser. The hair is weakened with consistent waxing."

Waxing is extremely painful.

Myth: "Waxing does hurt but I always say there's good hurt and bad hurt. Good hurt is knowing and using the right products before and after while also recommending good home care. Using the right wax especially in the bikini area also helps limit pain. I always use hard wax which is less invasive on the bikini area as well as for facial waxing wherever possible because it's less invasive and less hurtful."

You should shave between waxing appointments.

Myth: "No you shouldn't! What can happen if you're shaving in between wax appointments is now you're going to affect the regrowth of the hair. You might have some hairs coming out at one point and then a few days later another point. You want to try to keep the hairs all growing out about the same time so when you come back for your next waxing service as much hair is out as possible."

We hope this debunking interview brought you some clarity and comfort about waxing. Interested in learning more or starting your wax journey? Book your wax appointment with Jane at www.studio8lancaster.com/bookonline or by clicking below!
